Switching from smoking to vaping is a personal decision, and the relevant context is adults who already smoke. Clean air is the best option for the lungs, but for smokers who switch completely, vaping may reduce exposure to many of the harmful substances in smoke.
What does the research say?
Recent research reviews have found that nicotine e-cigarettes can help some adults who smoke to quit. The evidence on serious adverse events remains inconclusive, and this does not make vaping risk-free.
Complete Switching Versus Dual Use
Reducing exposure is more meaningful when cigarettes are replaced completely. Dual use, in which someone continues to smoke and vape over time, is not equivalent to switching completely. People trying to quit can also seek help from a doctor, a cessation clinic, or a recognized smoking-cessation service.
What cannot be guaranteed?
There is no universal timeline by which taste, smell, coughing, or overall sensation “must” change. Nor is there one way to choose a product or concentration that suits everyone. If an unusual, severe, or persistent symptom appears, stop using the product and contact a healthcare professional.
Do not use nicotine products at home or in the workplace in violation of the law, workplace policy, or the request of people nearby.
