Is there such a thing as passive vaping?

Secondhand vaping is not the same as secondhand smoking because there is no combustion or tobacco smoke. However, people nearby can be exposed to exhaled aerosol, so it is appropriate to approach this with caution and consideration.

What Is Known About Environmental Exposure?

The UK evidence update found that short-term, limited exposure studies did not identify a significant change in health markers among people nearby. At the same time, heavy or prolonged exposure can increase levels of nicotine or other substances, and evidence on long-term health outcomes remains insufficient.

Consideration Guidelines

It is advisable to avoid vaping near children, pregnant women, people with asthma or lung disease, and in enclosed spaces without consent. Respect local laws, business policies, and the requests of people nearby. Vaping outdoors or away from other people may have a smaller effect on their exposure, but does not reduce it to zero.
