Reports of e-cigarettes catching fire or exploding are generally associated with lithium-ion battery failure, an electrical short circuit, or improper battery use. The risk is not zero, so it is important to know the safety rules before using or charging them.

What is the difference between a regulated device and a mechanical mod?

A regulated device has electronic protections against certain conditions, such as short circuits or overheating. In a mechanical mod, the battery is connected directly to the coil without those protections. Protections can reduce risk, but they do not replace proper use, sound equipment, and the manufacturer’s instructions.

When does the risk increase?

A battery with torn wrapping, an impact, unusual heating, or contact with a metal object can cause a short circuit. Using a charger or battery type that is not suitable for the device, mixing batteries, or charging unattended can also increase the risk.

Practical safety rules

  • Use only a battery, charger, and cable that are compatible according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Do not carry loose spare batteries in a pocket or bag with keys and coins. Use a dedicated case.
  • Do not use a damaged, wet, unusually hot battery or one with torn wrapping.
  • Charge on a clean, stable surface in a visible location, and stay nearby while the device is charging.
  • If a device or battery becomes hot, smells burnt, swells, or behaves unusually, stop using it and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local emergency guidance.

This information is intended to reduce risk, not to guarantee that a failure will not occur. If you are unsure whether a battery is compatible or in good condition, it is best not to use it until you have verified it.
